“Courage: A Transformation & The Days of Awe

In Jewish traditions, the 10 days starting with Rosh Hashanah and ending with Yom Kippur are known as the “Days of Awe” . This period is part of the Jewish High Holidays, a time of profound introspection, repair and action. This morning we’ll explore some of the themes and spiritual invitations that are part of this season. How can we take honest stock of our lives? How can we restore deeper relationships to self, other, and the sacred? Rev. Dara Olandt is a UU minister of Jewish heritage and practice. Her writing has been featured in “Jewish Voices in Unitarian Universalism” (Skinner House, 2014). She formerly served as Assistant Minister at UUCSR and is delighted to return as a guest worship leader today.

“A JOURNEY TOWARDS WHOLENESS:

THE 8TH PRINCIPLE”

Our proposed 8th principle states: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” This service will explore how understanding this proposed principle can lead us on a journey toward wholeness.

“What Does It mean to Respect the Interdependent Web of Life?”

Our seventh Principle may be our Unitarian Universalist way of coming to fully embrace something greater than ourselves. The interdependent web—expressed as the spirit of life, the ground of all being, the oneness of all existence, the community-formingpower, the process of life, the creative force, can help us develop that social understanding of ourselves. It is a source of meaning to which we can dedicate our lives. How do you embrace our 7th principle?

In Gathering Service: As drops of rain that find each other and build to become a track, a rivulet, a stream, a river, a sea, so are we drawn together; so are we fortunate to find each other; so are we bound together, on this shared passage toward an unknown ocean and eternity. Please join us for our Annual Water Communion and as we kick off the beginning of our church year together. Join us as we gather and celebrate.

Where Can We Find Peace?

Widely recognized as one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the twentieth century, Jiddu Krishnamurti taught that in order for there to be peace in the world, we must each first make peace with ourselves. A magnet on my fridge has reminded me for years that peace and stillness are available any time we need them. Our sixth principle states that we are working toward the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. I invite you to ponder about your meaning of our 6th principle.

Morality and Machines

In beloved memory of our dear friends Phil and Jenny Harriman who endowed this service, we explore the issues of autonomous and intelligent systems as they continue to influence more and more of our decision making, even our moral decision making. We address strategies for being moral humans and/or moral machines even as amoral entities, both human and machine, gain increasing power in our world. These issues are implicated in several of our Seven UU Principles, and should inform our current deliberations on a potential eighth principle.

“Our Third Principle:
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth”

We are called, by our 3rd Principle to accept one another and offer encouragement to our spiritual growth. While we are each on our individual spiritual paths we share worship in community here at UUCSR. Today we celebrate UUCSR as a deeply nurturing, supportive community, reminding ourselves that our many relationships, here and elsewhere, are precious and sometimes challenging. We accept the challenges, understanding that where there is rupture there is the possibility of repair, creating a deeper, more complex connection. We are held by our covenant which calls us all to this work of loving acceptance of each other, asking us to readily offer forgiveness of others and to acknowledge our own shortcomings. By this we grow.

“Jazz, The Music of Celebration: UUCSR’s Annual Jazz Service.”

In a jazz group, as in our community at UUCSR, certain roles need to be filled. Someone has to play the melody, someone has to keep time, someone has to suggest the harmonic context. Playing in a jazz group involves both responsibility and freedom; freedom consists of understanding your responsibility well enough to act independently and still make the needed contribution to the group. We are embarking on a journey together may it be one of celebration, one of learning and one of commitment. I invite you to join me as we begin our journey of celebration.

*Short Congregational Meeting to Follow. Please plan to attend, we especially need voting members present in person or zoom*
