UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST SERVICE COMMITTEE

Reverend Waitstill Sharp was a Unitarian Minister in Massachusetts, where he lived with his wife
Martha Sharp and their two small children.  In 1939 they
agreed to go to Austria to establish
an “Underground Railroad” for Jewish
children under Nazi occupation. The Unitarian
Universalist Service
Committee (UUSC) sprang from their acts of amazing courage and
commitment to “the worth and dignity of every person.”  The UUSC continues to partner
with grassroots organizations anywhere rights are threatened – by
natural disasters, armed
conflicts, genocide, forced migration and systematic
injustice. We can imagine the demand
for their help now!

On Sunday, April 9th, aka “Justice Sunday,” Carly Cronon from UUSC will be here to tell us
how they are responding to the horrendous crises around the
world today and how we can
help. Tom Andrews, President and CEO of UUSC,
is convinced that churches have a central
role to play in these dangerous
times!

Come to the Board Room at 12:45 on 4/9 to find out what he means.

NEW: Bring what you would like to eat – we provide LIGHT snacks, NOT lunch.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby Meets Hot Topics

Come and hear from representatives that are working locally for a solution to climate change worldwide.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), exists to create the political will for climate solutions by enabling individual breakthroughs in the exercise of personal and political power.

By building constructive, working local relationships with all members of Congress, we seek passage of Carbon, Fee and Dividend, a climate change solution that bridges the partisan divide.

Carbon Fee and Dividend, a revenue-neutral carbon tax with 100% of the net revenue returned directly to households, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions 52% below 1990 levels within 20 years while growing the economy and saving lives.

Hear about our growth and activities and see where you could fit into an organization that is successfully building Bi-partisan support for a viable solution to climate change in our country.

Alan Proulx, a long-time member of UUCSR says: “I have looked at all the current solutions that could work in this political climate to produce real sustained reduction in greenhouse gas emissions quickly, while benefiting all U.S. households. This will really work.”

Additional CCL speakers:  Bruce Hagen and Barbara Moulton.

Come and see how this works.

Sunday, March 13th, 12:45 pm in The UUCSR Board Room

Spring Forward. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead the night before. This is the first day of Daylight Savings Time!!

The Lime Foundation devotes its energy to passionately advocating for the disadvantaged.  Their mission is to strengthen veterans, seniors, low income families and young people and give them the tools to build a better quality of life.  What they do:  (1) support a vocational training/construction apprenticeship program and provide free construction services to low-income families and the elderly.  This creates a double benefit for the community  – helps prepare people in disadvantaged communities for fulfilling careers while at the same time providing important services to people who could not otherwise afford them.   (2) run programs for the elderly in an effort to address America’s obesity epidemic through light exercise (dance, bowling, hiking) and healthy eating.  (3) bring positive, structured activities to disadvantaged youth, giving them the opportunity to learn technology  or play a musical instrument – great alternatives to substance abuse, truancy, exclusion.  Uses music and dance as a positive means of expression.  Features am activity center and a summer and after school mentoring and tutoring program.

Come and hear the Executive Director and founder of the Lime Foundation, Letitia Hanke, as she describes in detail the services this Foundation offers.

DECEMBER FILM:
INEQUALITY FOR ALL
THE 4TH FILM IN OUR CORRUPTION OF OUR
DEMOCRACY FILM SERIES
Brought to you by the Advocates for Social Justice Film Project

INEQUALITY FOR ALL By Robert Reich, directed by Jacob Kornbluth

This film comes to us from Robert Reich, a political commentator, economist, professor and author.  In this 2013 documentary Reich examines the widening income inequality in the United States and explores what effects this increasing gap has not only on U.S. economy but also American democracy itself.   Robert Reich has served in three administrations, that of Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.  He served as Secretary of Labor for Bill Clinton from 1993-1997.  He is currently the Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at University of California, Berkeley, teaching a course entitled, “Wealth and Poverty”.  This film is full of information communicated in an accessible manner and with a bit of gentle humor.  For those of us who are concerned about the distortion of our democracy that our wealth imbalance has wrought and those of us who care about the many among us who struggle to make ends meet this is a “must see” film.
Discussion, as always, follows the viewing of the film.
Please bring whatever you wish to eat.  We will offer a snack, not lunch.
Thanks.

SOCIAL JUSTICE FILM PROJECT
NOVEMBER’S FILM:
CAPITALISM:  A LOVE STORY

The Advocates for Social Justice Film Project is pleased to present the third film in our series on “The Corruption of Our Democracy”.  We are delighted to feature another Michael Moore film, “Capitalism:  A Love Story”…a bit of a Michael Moore mini film festival.  In this 2010 film Moore examines corporate greed, the global economic meltdown and their disastrous effect on American lives.  The film explores the social costs of corporate interests pursuing profits at the expense of the social good and the current reality that economic power is held in the hands of the few.  Viewers are led to ponder the question of the price our country pays for our love of capitalism.  Compelling, this film leads us into an economic understanding of the challenges to our democracy.

Discussion, as always, follows the viewing of the film.
Please bring whatever you wish to eat.  We will offer a snack, not lunch.  Thanks.
