Advocates for Social Justice uses resources from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.  UUSC is a branch of UUA that partners with local agencies both at home and abroad to respond to crises and work continuously to improve the lives of those not as fortunate as we are.  A video explaining their work is available here.  Their Web site is at http://www.uusc.org/

For the last several years the Diversity group has been dedicated to helping UUCSR become the fully welcoming anti-racist institution we are called to be. Through film showings, workshops, and professionally led classes, we are learning to look more deeply at ourselves, as well as learning where and how to engage more fully with the larger community.

NORTH BAY ORGANIZING PROJECT

UUCSR is one of about 25 non-profit environmental, labor, and religious organizations that work to mobilize our members and the larger community to address some of our most critical issues.   NBOP unites people to build leadership and grassroots power for social, economic, racial and environmental justice..The NBOP is currently working on:

    Immigration Reform
    Police Community Relations
    Education
    Jobs

Our efforts in the arena of gay civil rights include:

    Being a Welcoming Congregation, in which all people regardless of sexual orientation are invited to share their gifts and join us in the search for truth and meaning
    Participating in countless local gay pride events
    Supporting marriage equality legislation, and opposing regressive measures such as Proposition 8
    Opposing discrimination in housing, employment and any other place it occurs
    Our minister also performs weddings for members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) community.

More than 200 UUCSR members crowded in front of the church on October 26th to support marriage equality with signs and banners urging ‘No on Proposition 8: Unfair and Wrong’.

As the intensity of scapegoating minority communities increases, we are working to develop a Civilian Review Board of Law Enforcement actions, and to become a County of Refuge for immigrants being victimized by local and national government agencies.

The Adrienne Swenson Award is given annually to a local high school student, who is active in peace and social justice activities.  The recipient  intends to continue being an activist and is planning to pursue further education or training, either in college, trade school or university. Family Fun Night is a program held at the Catholic Charities Family Support Center, the only shelter is Santa Rosa that serves whole families. Every Friday evening from 6 pm to 7:30 pm UUC volunteers either play with the younger children or run a bingo game for older children and adults.
