GRATEFUL, EVEN FOR MY WOUNDS

Service Leaders: Rev. Chris Bell, Rev. Dara Olandt, Joe Gabaeff
Music by: Sally Jones,  Billie Sue Fischer; Roger Corman
Share the Basket: YWCA Safe House

As befits the month within which Thanksgiving falls, our monthly theme in November is Gratitude. We are told to count our blessings, and that it is possible to find meaning in every one of the experiences in our lives. It is not an easy task in this hard and often unjust world, but it is one worth pursuing, even into the dark and difficult parts of our lives.

HONORING OUR ANCESTORS

Service Leaders: Rev. Chris Bell, Aphrodite Bellochio, CUUPS
Music by: Sadie Sonntag & the UU Choir; Roger Corman
Share the Basket: Breakfast for our Neighbors

Many traditions recognize this time of year, with its falling leaves, as one when the boundary between life and death grows thin. This service will give us a chance to honor our ancestors and departed loved ones, and make friends with the reality of death. An altar will be built. Please bring an image or object that represents a person (or more) who has passed away.

A WABI SABI LIFE

Service Leaders: Rev. Dara Olandt, Sharon McCarty
Music by: Sadie Sonntag & the UU Choir; Roger Corman
Share the Basket: California Alliance for Retired Americans Education Fund

A what what? “Wabi-Sabi”, meaning “perfectly imperfect”, is a Japanese aesthetic in art and philosophy, and its understanding of beauty and truth can be very helpful in our own lives.

THE NIGHT OF WIND AND FLAME

Service Leaders: Rev. Chris Bell, Rev. Dara Olandt, Eric Fischer
Music by: Robin Rogers & this week’s UUCSR band; Roger Corman
Share the Basket: Becoming Independent

Today, we will solemnize the one-year anniversary of the fires and consider what we’ve learned as a spiritual community and a county. We’ll address some ways to face suffering and disaster while still trusting and loving Mother Nature. And we might just get a little angry about our society’s sluggish response to climate change.

A4SJ FILM PROJECT: SICKO

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CONGREGATION, SANTA ROSA

ADVOCATES FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE FILM PROJECT PRESENTS:

Your Film Project has chosen “SICKO” by Michael Moore as our kick-off film for our 2018 – 2019 series. Throughout the year we will present films addressing the following issues, suggested by you in our recent survey:

PHYSICAL HEALTH,/MENTAL HEALTH/HEALTH CARE/LONGEVITY/
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/CHOICES IN DYING/ DISABILITY RIGHTS

“SICKO”, a 2007 documentary, explores health care in the U.S., focusing on the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Throughout this film, you will be shaking your head, sometimes in disbelief and often in outrage as Michael Moore offers comparisons between the profiteering, non-universal U.S. system of healthcare with the non-profit, universal healthcare systems of Cuba, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France.

Discussion, as always, follows the viewing of the film. Please bring whatever you wish to eat. We will offer a snack, not lunch. This is a full-length film, running for 123 minutes. We hope you will be able to plan your afternoon to include the entire film. You’ll not want to miss any of the segments.

THE BIG BANG

Service Leaders: Rev. Chris Bell, Veronica Jordan

Music by: Susan Panttaja and others; Roger Corman

October Theme: Creation

Why is there something instead of nothing? Why does the world exist? Does the modern scientific view hold room for a Creator? Just what the heck is the quantum potentiality field and why should you care? We’ll ask, and maybe even dare to answer, these questions today.

I STILL HAVEN’T FOUND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

Service Leaders: Rev. Chris Bell, Scott Miller
Music by: U2; Roger Corman
Share the Basket:  Southold UU Rebuilding Fund

One of the best-selling bands of all time, known for their cutting-edge stage shows and outspoken political activism, U2 are also one of the most overtly spiritual groups in the rock pantheon. So much so that some devoted Episcopalian fans have even created a “U2charist” liturgy. We won’t do that, exactly, but we will examine the wisdom and yearning in the groups iconic songs. Today is Scott Miller’s swan song as a Worship Associate.

FORKS, FIGS, AND BEWILDERMENT

Service Leaders: Rev. Dara Olandt, Izzy Fischer, Rose St. John
Music by: Sadie Sonntag & the Choir; Roger Corman
Share the Basket: Breakfast for Our Neighbors

What happens when we come to a decision point in our lives known as the proverbial “fork in the road” ? Do we “choose” our paths? Or do our paths “choose” us? What may help us decide when the way seems baffling?

Also: a modern parable about fig trees.
